Painting Into the Sun En Plein Air

This is an acrylic en plein air painting looking over the Yolo Bypass (Fazio Bird Sanctuary). During the winter, excess water from the Sacramento and American Rivers are diverted into this huge lowland area. Even during the summer, a certain amount of water is in this area for all the birds. Anyway, a few weeks ago, I set up my Easy L and faced into the morning sun and haze. No umbrella set up as the sun in the east was still very low. I love fog, haze, smoke, and steam.

nice light David!
I've painted there several times but I've yet to do a satisfactory painting. Without eucalyptus trees, I'm utterly lost;-)

I have absolutely no doubt, Terry, that if you go back there, you will pull off a good one. I know you love eucalyptus (the only way I can spell "eucalyptus" is by looking at your comment!), but you don't need no stinkin eucalyptus (had to look at your comment again!!) to paint the Fazio bird sanctuary.

Coming from a master of gestural painting (which I love), I truly appreciate your comment! Thanks David.

I shy away from directly into the light pictures. You showed me how to see it.

Mary: I'm fairly new at looking directly into sunlight and painting. I got the general atmospheric gist en plein air, and then spent another few hours in my studio to fine tune (without the pupils in my eyes closing down!. It definitely was a challenge and fun!
