ME @ MIKE

A little over a week ago, pre Christmas, I challenged Mike Bailey (Current president of the National Watercolor Society, fantastic artist, inspiring teacher, good friend) that both he and I paint a beach/ocean scene from a photo I took off Asilomar Beach on the Monterrey Peninsular. He accepted, and away we both went. Well wouldn't ya know it, Mike totally rearranged the composition and finished as of today with this beauty! My approach was to tweak the composition ever so slightly and concentrate on looking into the setting sun. This is what I LOVE about painting challenges . . . they keep you on your best painting behavior and even sometimes inspire you to push the envelope (or should I say the palette). Oh yes . . . they also show you other ways to approach a subject. Too bad Mike's in Santa Cruz and I'm in Sacramento . . . we need to clink libation glasses to the completion of the challenge! Thanks, Mike!!

Way to go, Dave! There are a few things I would like to change on my painting, but after a full week, ta heck wiffit! I really enjoyed the challenge. Let's do it again!

This time I will send a few pics.

I was hoping there will be a next time, and that you get to pick the pic. Yep, that was a value challenge, but aren't most paintings that?

David, Mike,

It's really great to see the work of two of my most favorite artists together. I am fortunate to know Milind Mulick (who like me is from Pune, India) and wish some day I could at least shake hands with two of you. I love your paintings and more than that your perspective about painting! Many thanks for sharing your work and your thoughts. Wish you both a fabulous 2012!

Thank you so much for your kind words, Ajay, and a fabulous 2012 to you too in far off in Pune. By the way, I and about 20 of my students are proud owners of Milind's watercolor book, and I have his sketch book as well.

Howdy Ginny! Glad you like Mike and my efforts here. Mike's a great watercolorist and it was a kick in the palette to do this painting challenge with him. I'm conducting a three day workshop at Gig Harbor in the state of Washington this August. I'd like to do a workshop in Florida this winter. If you are interested, I can give you the cost info. for my Aug. wrkshp. Love your work by the way!
