Two watercolor portrait studies on my art hanger

The winter holiday season is a good time to play. Some of my play time has been with my favorite medium . . . watercolor and my favorite subject . . . portraiture. Here are two half sheets I just finished of two of last semester's students that were in the drawing class that I teach at Sacramento City College. I often hang my studies on my art hanger to look at and cogitate upon my next move. I would love to get your feed back, dear readers . . . the good, the bad, and even the ugly. Thank you in advance and have a very good 2012!

Can't believe I'm saying this since I'm not one for abstracts, but the left hand is my favorite! Happy new Year!

Well, dang, I love everything you do and love the colors you choose which are so different than anything else I've seen; but I have to say (you did ask for it) that the lines/blocks of color in the face on the left are a bit disturbing. The one on the right is, of course, perfect as is :) Now for the left one - much more fun to work on one that needs something else...perhaps you could play even more with the skin tones, making them darker, redder, etc. and those blocks and lines would be tribal tattoos or something similar? Whatever you choose to do, I know your style will show through. Thanks for sharing your work with us throughout 2011 - I may not have learned anything (I'm pretty thick-headed at times) but I enjoyed every visit and every visual treat.

The image on the left is very exciting.!!!! It's on the verge of falling apart. The values hold it though.
There i a lady up here named Gwenn Seemal who puts really wild geometrics on her acrylic portraits - they are huge but at a distance they meld into facial form. she's on my blog roll. Happy new year to you!

I find it interesting that their expressions -eyes especially very somber but the colors and shapes are very exciting and tell a different story!

Thank you, Rhonda (as always) for weighing in on my effort here. These are my first two portrait explorations for the new year. We shall see where I go. By the way, I have some great head shots of tattooed gang members I might want to paint!
