The Unvarnished Truth of the Matter

Three evenings ago on Monday, I gave a watercolor portrait demonstration to Sacramento's watercolor club, WASH. Within my one hour alloted demo time, I attempted to paint four portraits in Payne's Gray whilst talking about the importance of familiarizing one's self with the value pattern, contours, and edges of the face. These obviously were done in a rush and lack the normal "polish" of my work, but I think they are fairly successful and instrumental in getting my message across. I manage to get three portraits completed and the initial value lay-in wash completed on the fourth. Next Thursday, I do this demo again in front of another art group. Please wish me luck, and wave me good bye. I'll post that effort as well. If I complete all four, perhaps I can get into the Guinness Book of World Records and a guest appearance on the Charlie Rose Show? (-:

Very good. I'll be pulling for you to get all 4 next time. Are these live models?

You are simply going to have to step it up, David!!

Still, I think these are fabulous, as are all your ink wash pieces. I still haven't mustered the courage to give it a go...

conservative..., you are right! I need to step it up with my next demo or as we say in the USA, I'll need to step up to the plate and knock one out of the park. We shall see.

Brand New..., Glad you like these!

Barbara, Thanks for the "hurray!"!!

Robin Roberts, Thanks for the support! These were all painted from reference photos. I enjoy live work, but most all my paintings are from photos. They are my interpretations, however. I frown on copying photos.

IInspired and supported by the beauty of these portraits I thought that I had to try my hand at tonal studies. What I did with friends this week and I'm happy. I intend to continue in my sketch outputs. Get outside as often as possible is my next challenge ... See you soon

sorry for the repeat...I didn't see the "after approval" thing at the top and thought my first comment didn't go through. Can you tell I am new blogger?

I would have loved to have seen this!!! And you talked at the same time? A man of many many talents :) You show that less is more and it's all about value and shape even when painting faces.

David Lobenberg said...

Lydie, Hurrah for Payne's Gray and the study of values!

David Lobenberg said...

Thanks, Jane. Love your black and white camera sketch!

Yep, an hour Lisa, and I was pooped at the end!

Thank you Vicki...!

David Lobenberg said...

Rhonda, Yes I talked at the same time and repeatedly said that I was painting from dark to light...wrong!!...not easy painting and simultaneously talking!
