Plein Air Painting of A and A Bakery ruins

Last Sunday, I was invited along with about fifteen other prominent Sacramento plein air artists to paint at an annual plein air event in my neck of the woods, East Sacramento. E. Sac. is a very "tony" area of my fair city, and has some beautiful parks and splendiferous old homes. Being a fan of artist William Wray, self proclaimed "Painter of Blight", I decided to paint A and A Bakery. For at least ten years now, the bakery has been out of business and their facilities have gone to rack and ruin. Perfecto!!...a blighted area in tony East Sacramento! My painting won one of the people's choice awards during the event's exhibition. Another artist (Robert Sandidge) was painting the same scene whilst positioned behind me, so there I am in his oil painting... Sweet! I painted in acrylic. Elapsed time: 4 hours. I now proclaim myself "Painter of Dilapidated Bakeries".

congratulations on the award! I really like what did with the brick wall and which details and light/shadow you choose to paint.

You really brought that to life! When I saw the photo first (an excellent idea) I was really curious to see how you could make THAT look interesting and worth painting. A LESSON for me, how to SEE what's before me. Was this part of the celebration opening the Sac branch of the CAC last weekend?

It was hard work and hard fun, Carol.

Yes, Meera, its always a matter of choice what and what not to paint.

Dianne, It was a fund raising event for the Clunie building at McKinley Park in East Sacto.

I am so glad others commented on subject matter.
Several blogs I follow post the photo and then the painting which is an excellent teaching tool...I want to see how the artist altered the subject matter or eliminated things. VERY helpful. I certainly would not have chosen that subject matter (before seeing how you did it) and it made me think of Sandy Maudlin who chose man hole covers for a whole series. And they were fantastic. Go figure

You've made something quite beautiful out of something that wasn't! And congratulations on the award. I hope you awarded yourself with a pastry at a bakery that was still operating after the plein air day :)
