Ahoy All Artist Who Would Like To Participate!

I have no idea why I used "Ahoy" in my headline except that I like that word. Anyway, brilliant artist Milind Mulick in far off India and I in the golden state of California are proposing a self portrait paint-off. "Paint-off" is somewhat of a challenging and intimidating word. Lets call it a Global self portrait love-in. No matter what your level of artistic ability or what medium you enjoy working in, this is an invitation to do a self portrait to be sent to my blog by the end of June at which time we can show off our efforts. Hey...it's going to be rollicking good fun!...and...what better way to discover yourself visually than doing a self portrait. You are invited! This is a pen and ink self portrait I did about 3 or 4 years ago in a class I taught at Sacramento City College...go Panthers!!

great idea, David,I have been putting it off for so many years now.It intimidates me! But now, with your support, I am ready to give it a try:)
BTW I liked your self portrait in color very much!

I have enjoyed your self-portraits, even those that don't show a bit of self-consciousness in the creation :) and might just have to try this...I've only done one small self-portrait and this will be an interesting challenge.

Ahoy,

I accept the challenge. Love this pen and ink drawing. The vertical line technique is super. Real ink? You are the man. I used to draw with real ink, but lost my courage.

End of June eh?

Take care,

Barbara

Love that line! And your commentary at the bottom. Almost makes me want to have a curly beard, err. . .hair. If I'm brave enough to take part in the love-in, will a schmear-proof uniball vision pen- micro or fine- be able to achieve enough line width variation? Or do I need the type w/ different nibs?

Maybe I should just sit back and watch. :)

Arti, Yahoo...go girl!

Rhonda Carpenter: I don't know if you are aware of the fact that the bluegrass state is a particularly conducive area for self portraiture!

David Lobenberg said...

Barbara, Wunderbar!! You betch...real ink here with a steel nib pen. End of June.

David Lobenberg said...

Anonymous, Be brave and have fun while ya doin it! Uniballs should work out fine. With the one you see here, I penciled in the main contour lines then did my parallel inking on top. After I was done, I erased the pencil lines with a needed eraser.

Hi David, this is kind of like my idea to have a blog with artists' self portraits. Please send yours to my blog and I'll send mine to yours. My blog is Artists Paint Themselves and it's at artistspaint.blogspot.com
Thanks!

Dear David,
Its a wonderful portrait. I think it is an excellent idea that you have come up with. I am not a blogger and I havent participated in any such events before. I paint mostly in watercolors and oils. I would also like to participate in this if I am eligible.

Best wishes,
Vinayak Deshmukh

David Lobenberg said...

Vinayak, Yes, please join us and do a self portrait!

David, count me in, too. I take the challenge here in Indiana. I don't paint people, but since I will be trying to paint ME, I don't care if I get mad at myself if it doesn't look like me.

I found you at the "Artists Paint Themselves" blog. Your work is wonderful. I scrolled way back in your posts, and though I can't be in your classroom, I feel the door is open just a crack. I look forward to following along.

What a nice drawing. I love it. If I can, I will do a dorky self portrait to enter into your promotion which is a fantastic idea.

Dork away Terry B. for I know your SP will be wonderful and hopefully dorky to the nth degree or thereabouts!

Your self-portraits are compelling and masterful. I, too, like the word "ahoy." Perhaps its from living on a sailboat for so long.

David Lobenberg said...

Kathy, I think that more people (like us) need to come out and admit that "Ahoy" is a lovely word! Love them egg shells... Ahoy!
