"The Pause That Refreshes"

In my City College Acrylic/Oil painting class last Friday, I handed out to my students bottles of Coke and plastic cups. The assignment was to paint them...an exercise in composition, color mixing, and paint application style. I believe that "The Pause That Refreshes" was a Coca Cola slogan from the i940's. I have always liked this slogan, and it definitely makes me want to down a coke! "Coke Is It" from the 1990's is lame. This is my demo painting on stretched 8"X10" canvas. About 45 minutes painting time. The bottles of Coke were for export to Mexico where they like their Cola sweetened by pure sugar cane...smart people.

A very nice piece as are the dogs below. I would be interested in seeing the selected student work that you thought best.

Have always loved the zing of that blue with that red (cap v bg col here). What colo(u)rs did you use to get that Coke colo-r?? You nailed that. Hats off to you David on this one..

Hi David,

Great painting. This has so many things I love, lush brushstrokes, turquoise, red, and sparkling highlights plus good design.

Take care,

Barbara

Wayne, I think the cola color was: burnt umber, Mars black, and a little cool red like alizarin...I think. I was working with a limited palette of colors from a previous job. Glad you like this class demo. About 1hr. of painting time. Wish all my studies could go that fast.

Yeah, Barbara, sometimes paint studies like these fly off the brush...sometimes!

Milind, That's great. I'd be ready for another paint-off around June. There is an artist in India who would be interested by the name of Ujwala at ujwala.wordpress.com.

Reminds me of Coke a Cola days in Atlantic, Iowa.

Onpainting, Why on earth is Atlantic
"The Coke a Cola capital of Iowa"?
