Back to Grapes

Two grape watercolors I just completed. One has back lighted grapes and leaves and the other has front lighted grapes and leaves. In both watercolors, the grapes start out as an amorphous wash of color. When dried, I go in and define individual grapes with darker shadow values. In other words, I go out of my way with the initial wash not to paint individually defined grape shapes.

  5. Kathy, Gladya like the grape h2o's. Ever have fresh squeezed grape juice. Nothing like you get at the super market and really, really tasty.

  6. David, these are absolutely stunning. I am not sure why, but of all the fruit paintings, it is truly only the grape clusters that I love. There is something in those purples, those broad green leaves...Just beautiful!

  7. David, you are a most talented painter. Once again, you have provided us with a world of important lessons in two paintings. And add my name to the list of those who love them both.

  8. Love this too much. You're the painter. Plain and simple (not). So astonishingly good.

    Take care,

    Barbara

  9. Wow, wow, wow. These are superb! I like the backlit version best, but that's purely a personal preference. I can see the light coming through, you totally got the glow.

  10. Autumn, The back lite sun coming through the grapes and leaves is what I get jazzed about plus the idea that in a year or few, most of the grapes will be wine.

  14. Fruit of the vine doesn't look this good when a food stylist does it. David- these are spectacular. Every grape nuance has been showcased. The hazy film, the iridescence, the subtle color shifts.

  15. Thanks, comrade Bonnie. The hazy grape film was accomplished by mixing cerulium (spelling???) blue with my grape red. Don't pass this information on as it is a state secret!

  16. I think it's an " Estate " secret.
Thinking you meant Cerulean blue. Whatever it is, it's magic from tube to brush in your hands.
