If I was rich, I would hire a pipe smoker lackey smoke in my studio while I'm painting.

If you are a baby boomer, and I am in spades, you remember Walter Cronkite, the world renowned TV news anchor man. I conducted an acrylic portraiture workshop last Sunday, and "Uncle Walter" was our subject. By the way, I LOVE the smell of pipe tobacco. If I was rich, I would hire a pipe smoker lackey smoke in my studio while I'm painting.
I absolutely love this one as well as the double portrait in the previous post -- I marvel how you can replicate the process time after time.

ReplyDeleteA wonderful portrait, David, bursting with character..I saw it in one of those small thumbnails on a blog and it grabbed me immediately. My father is one of the last great pipe smokers, and I could write a novel here on that subject, easily. Someday, for the real lowdown on the genius of "pipemanship" you must track down Stephen Potter's books (my favorite humorist after Twain), he nails it like nobody else ever has. Bpp. Bppp.
ReplyDeleteMeera, I only did this Cronkite portrait so that at the very end, I could paint in the wisps of pipe smoke. There ain't nothin like pipe tobacco smoke!

ReplyDeleteLook at all that detail in his face!! Magnificent work, David! My husband smokes a pipe; feel free to fly him on out occasionally. (Have to admit it does indeed smell wonderful.) I love how you handled the pipe smoke too (my one attempt at smoke/steam was a dismal flop).

ReplyDeleteAutumnLeaves: Here's how I paint smoke: load a little white paint across the end of a flat brush. Pull the brush up in a shallow wavy motion and at the same time, twist or rotate the brush now and then. You will get a swirling smokey look.
