Pune, India and my Painting Friend Milind Mulick

Here is my finished acrylic painting on stretched canvas painted from a reference photo of a street scene in Pune India emailed to me by the fantastic Indian artist, Milind Mulick. We are at the finish line of a "paint off". Milind has already posted one of his acrylic renderings of this scene and will post another soon. I did a similiar "paint off" of a farm truck with some other artists a few months ago, and it was a kick in the canvas to compare the results. Karin Jurick does this type of thing every month and with any and all artists that may want to participate. It is fascinating to view the results. I will be adding another Mulick painting of this scene (he is putting the finishing touches on it) to this post soon. Stay tuned. The top is Milind's acrylic and the bottom is mine.

    David and Milind- great to see how you both caught all the essential elements and put your own touches to them.
    These comparisons are so interesting to see- how one edits in or edits out, interprets details or not, line, shadow, all of it.

    They are both terrific.

    I love to see artists do this - offer two separate interpretations of the same scene or subject.

    Great work David! I was wondering how you would resolve all the confusing light, shape and shadows in the image and you did a masterful job!

    Spot on, Bonnie. It's about editing (in my case a little adding), emphasis (strong or subtle), color, and value. Wasn't easy with Milind's photo, but challenges are fun.

    Great painting David..You have captured the light and the essence wonderfully.
    Tha food provision in Hindi pronounced like"Khadya padartha"
    I will post the other 2 attempts in couple of days

    Thanks for the happy B day, Milind, and i"m glad you like the painting. Of course I'd like to do more studies, but alas, I need to work on other things. Looking forward to seeing your renderings. I know that they will be wonderful!

    hi david, i have seen these places in reality, and with conviction can say that you have hit the bulls eye.Wonderful painting depicting indian way of life.We are perpetually celebrating life through colours. all our festivals are very colourful and loud to westerners, but thats the way we are!See slumdog millionaire, you nwill know what i mean.So this colourful side of celebrating life has come through your painting very well.Bravo!! i am going to see milinds paintng to his studio today!!

    Thank you Sanjeev! Yes, my wife and I saw Slum Dog Millionaire. It's wonderful that we Americans are seeing such a great movie from your part of the world. Isn't it fantastic how we artists the world over can share our passion?! Going to Milind's studio?,,,lucky you! I can hardly wait to see his rendition.

    I am always in awe to see how different artists express the same view...these two examples are fantastic pieces of editing from a photo and still keeping the elements of importance to the scene! I also love how people see color (although subjective) differently....yet the values are seen similarly. Bravo David and Milind...you both rock!
