I'm working on the last three water color paintings for The Three Sisters Restaurant. This is my little sister Rosaretta Hildago Consuella Cinco De Mayo Lobenberg. She is a member of the Turlock Folklorica California Mexicana Dance Group. I'm quite proud of her! In fact, so is her other older brother, Billy Joe Bob Lobenberg. I started with her head first, because if I failed there and had to start a new painting, I wouldn't have any time invested in the rest of it (i.e. the complicated dress!) The goddess of art fortunately smiled down on me and guided my hand into painting a successful likeness of Rosaretta. I then proceeded to render her dress and complete the painting. Like the other three paintings, this one is on a full sheet of 140lb cold press Fabriano Artistico water color paper.
What a diverse family you have - and we get to meet them all! ;-)
ReplyDeleteWow - that is one complicated dress indeed. This restaurant is gonna look so colorful once you are done! Next time we go through Sacramento, we'll make a note to stop there for a margarita and art admiration.

ReplyDelete.. a beautiful vibrant watercolour, and a portrait! You've made it look like it just simply flowed off the brush (which of course it did), yet I know (from years of wc experience) how phenomenally hard these are!).
Cold pressed Fabriano 140lb is a favourite of mine too (especially for the kind of portraiture you've carried off here) and also a surface that Charles Reid (a great influence in my own watercolour journey) introduced me to many years ago.
I love the vibrancy of colour in this piece, yet within the transparent use of the medium. The 'lost and found' edges are masterful IMO. The handling of light and shade is also masterful and all the more remarkable since you have brought this piece to not only feature light (through vale/tone) but also equally colour itself! Now that's hard!
The rhythms of the coloured stripes are jazzy and eye catching and seems to rather 'enthrone' the 'visage': it's as if the watercolour goddess did indeed smile upon you and suffuse/dissolve herself in this work. A winner! Congrats David

Thanks Marian. I once had to do full figure portraits of the Sacramento Kings basketball team. I started with the heads first. They all were reproduced on 7,000 posters that I signed and numbered! Took four days with a good friend of mine that numbered followed by me scrawling. Yes, we got paid to do this.
